The IRS confirmed late yesterday that the tax filing deadline will be postponed until May 17, 2021. The deadline for tax payments — including quarterly self-employment taxes or underpaid tax amounts — will also be postponed until May 17th.
The extra time applies to individual taxpayers, including those who pay self-employment taxes. This is an automatic extension of time, so you do not need to file any forms or call the IRS to qualify for the May 17th deadline.
Still, we advise you to still file on time if possible, especially if you need your tax refund. In addition, should there be another round of economic stimulus payments, your updated information on file with the IRS could help speed delivery to you.
For individuals needing extra time to file past May, the extended deadline will be October 15, 2021.
